Slate is a specific stone compared to other natural stone. It has layers that makes it complicated to finish.

There are two processes that slate tiles go through during fabrication: gauging and calibration.

Calibration is a process to even out the thickness of the slate tile. Due to the layered nature of slate it can be calibrated but with high tolerance to prevent increasing fragility and potential breakage of the stone or chipping. Meaning that finished stone still will have different thickness thought the tile.

Gauging is a process to put ridges on the back of the tile to insure good bond and even top surface during installation.

It is the nature of ALL slate products to be fragile. Those who are looking for the natural beauty of slate understand that there will be more waste with this product than would be with other more solid stones. The price point reflects the vulnerability of the product. Because of Slate's fragile nature, there will also be natural spauling and flaking during shipping as well. Because of mentioned nature of the slate when buying tiles one should keep in mind that it is safer to have 15%-20% extra amount for the installation project to be finished.
